This past Sunday saw a vibrant gathering of young brass talent as 18 brass players from five different brass bands across Cumbria came together in Millom for a very special afternoon. The event marked the first meeting of the Cumbria Youth Brass Band (CYBB) in their second year, and the excitement was palpable.

After a summer break, the players were reunited, with some fresh new faces joining the ranks for the first time. The energy in the room was buzzing as everyone caught up and welcomed the new players with open arms. Of course, no CYBB rehearsal is complete without a snack break, and the biscuits, courtesy of Liz (affectionately known as “Biscuits and Logistics”), went down a treat as usual.

The focus of the day was the band’s new, ambitious repertoire. Despite the challenge, every player rose to the occasion, taking the complex pieces in their stride and pushing themselves to deliver their best performances. The dedication of these young musicians is clear to see, and their teamwork and enthusiasm are an inspiration.

This year, in addition to honing the ensemble’s sound, we’re focusing on the emotional impact that being part of CYBB has on our players. Sunday’s rehearsal was a perfect example of how music can bring joy, as the overall atmosphere was one of happiness and fulfilment. It’s heartwarming to see the players not only developing their technical skills but also experiencing the emotional rewards of being part of such a supportive and dynamic group.

A special highlight of the day was the presence of Phil Goodwin, Head of the Royal Northern College of Music’s Engage project. Phil and his team will be supporting CYBB over the coming months, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have their expertise on board. Phil led a rousing performance of Slaidburn, which the band played with more confidence and precision than ever before. Even the newest members joined in and left with smiles on their faces—a true testament to the welcoming, inclusive nature of the CYBB community.

While it was a long day for the minibus drivers, Julie and Ian, the enthusiasm from everyone involved made it all worthwhile. The afternoon was a fantastic start to the new season, and we’re excited to continue building on this momentum with more rehearsals, performances, and special guests in the months ahead.

We’re incredibly grateful to all the parents, caregivers, and supporters who make this possible and look forward to what’s in store for the Cumbria Youth Brass Band this year!

Thank you to all involved for a wonderful day, and here’s to many more musical memories ahead!
