The Story of Cumbria Brass

One of the first outcomes was the creation of Melody Makers in Tebay — a youth band that quickly became a model for inclusive, community-led music making. From this group emerged some of the county’s most promising young players, including mentors who now support younger musicians. This reflected Drum and Brass’s wider ethos: developing not only musical skill, but confidence, leadership, and community spirit.

The next step was the Play Brass in Eden project, which mapped local bands and created an online directory still in use today. Alongside this, Drum and Brass expanded school outreach, introducing hundreds of children to brass through engaging, accessible sessions using brightly coloured plastic instruments. These visits revealed a central challenge: enthusiasm was high, but long-term pathways into bands were fragile.

The Next Steps

The next step was the Play Brass in Eden project, which mapped local bands and created an online directory still in use today. Alongside this, Drum and Brass expanded school outreach, introducing hundreds of children to brass through engaging, accessible sessions using brightly coloured plastic instruments. These visits revealed a central challenge: enthusiasm was high, but long-term pathways into bands were fragile.

In response, the Cumbria Brass Network was formally established, leading to the creation of the Cumbria Youth Brass Band. From the outset, Drum and Brass championed inclusion over selection. While this approach was not without difficulty, it has proven its value. Three years on, the original players remain, stronger musicians and more confident young people — evidence that growing from the ground up works.

With support from Brass Bands England, the Network also launched an annual county brass festival, now entering its third year and attracting bands from far beyond Cumbria. Listening to feedback, the festival continues to evolve, with improved facilities and a new gala concert celebrating visiting and local bands alike.

Alongside this, Drum and Brass has developed a successful local ensemble and schools delivery model, now offered both independently and in partnership with the Cumbria Music Hub. Together, these strands form a connected, sustainable system — ensuring brass music in Cumbria continues to thrive for generations to come.
